As we all know, Lord Ganesha is worshiped in the first place in any religious ceremony, so the puja begins with worshiping Lord Ganesha. The puja has sixteen steps, and before going to that devotee, they have to read the story of Hartalika Teej. The story must be narrated to all people during puja.

Story behind the Hartalika Vart

Once upon a time, goddess Parvati, the daughter of King Himavat, deftly desired to marry Lord Shiva. She worshiped Lord Shiva for many years to make him happy for marriage; she performed every ritual. Her father wants her to marry Lord Vishnu, but she doesn't get it because she assumes Lord Shiva as her husband. So she started worshiping Lord Shiva in the forest. After seeing her devotion for Lord Shiva once, her close friend took her away to the forest to prevent her from marrying her father, who was forcing her to marry Vishnu. So in the forest, Parvati continued her devotion with greater determination.

After getting happy by her devotion, one day Lord Shiva finally appeared and accepted her as his partner. So this event is believed to be the origin of Hartalika Teej, where women worship goddess Parvati for blessings of their happy married life. So on this day devotees make Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati idols from clay and worship them. They celebrate this day with a lot of devotion by performing puja rituals and narrating katha.
