Legends of the Ramayana: Meet Ravana's Four Brothers

There are many historical tales and stories in the holy land of India. One of them is the Ramayana, the story about the historical battle of truth and faith, the story about winning good over bad, or, in other words, the story about the lives of Lord Rama and Demon King Ravana.

South Asia is the holy land where warriors were born and ended their lives to protect truth and good. It is a land where noblemen ruled to protect the people and end the terror of evil powers.

A long time ago, there was a demon king named Ravana; he had 10 heads. But his tales got more famous after his historical clash with Lord Rama. Everybody knows about the Ramayana, the Hindu book, in that the epic battle of Lord Rama against Ravana is mentioned. The battle of Lord Rama and Ravana always remains stored in the hearts of devotees as a timeless reminder. It shows how the sister of Ravana writes the story about ending his own brother's life.

In the Ramayana, there are 4 brothers of Ravana mentioned. In this blog, we are going to describe all four brothers of Ravana. Some of them are demons, and some are heroes or gods; we are going to discuss all about them.

The Brothers of Ravana

Kumbhakarna

In the legendary battle of Rama and Ravana, there was a gaint demon named Kumbhkarna. He has height like a mountain and body like a whale. Kumbhkarna is blessed with a boon from Lord Bharama; once he worshipped Lord Bharama with his brothers. Lord Bharama asked him for a wish; he wanted to say Indrasana (the place of the king of gods), but Devi Saraswati sited on his tongue and forced him to say Nindrasana (the place of sleeping). So Lord Bharama agreed on his wish and told him that he will sleep continuously for 6 months and will only get awake after 6 months for a day. If someone gets him awake during his sleep time, his powers get demolished, and he becomes a normal person with a big body.

During the battle, when all the helping hands of Ravana got killed, he asked him to fight with Rama. Kumbhkarna said to Ravana that he had done a bad thing; he kidnapped Devi Sita. He said Ravan to send her back to Lord Rana, but Ravana denied his offer and said that you have to fight with Rama; this is your responsibility. Kumbhkarna agreed because he couldn't deny his elder brother's order; he went to fight and get killed by Lord Rama.

Vibhishana

Vibhishana, the younger brother of Ravana and Kumbh Karna, also received a boon from Lord Bharama. He played a vital role in the Ramayana; he is a demon, but he never killed someone and never spread his terror among people. His heart reminds him of being pure and a devotee of Lord Narayana. He is one who helped Lord Rama every time in Lanka; he revealed the secret of Ravana that he had his powers in his belly button. This secret helped Lord Rama, and he killed Ravana and ended his terror. After Ravana, he became the king of Lanka, but Navar lived in Lanka and got back to Ayodhya with Lord Rama. He is one of the 8 chiranjivies (immortals) in Hinduism.

Vaishravana (Lord Kuber)

Lord Kuber was the elder half-brother of King Ravana. The fathers of Ravana and Kuber are the same, but their mothers are different. In simple words, Kuber is the stepbrother of Ravana. Lord Kuber is known as the god of wealth; he is ruler of the north. He is the person who designed the lanka for Lord Shiva and Mata Parvati. Lord Brahma had granted him a boon that made Lord Kuber the god of wealth.

Ahiravana

Ahirava is the king of Patal Lok (underworld); he was born in darkness and black shadow. He was a master of dark arts. In the battle of Rama and Ravana, he becomes a secret weapon for Ravana, who gets successful in distracting Lord Hanuman to kidnap Ram-Laxman.
